No more P0171 on my 98! Also, change your tranny mounts people.....
Hey guys, been working on my Lexus since i purchased it used with 248k. It now has 254k and is in much better shape and runs much much better.
For awhile I was getting a P0171 code (system too lean bank1) as well as a VVT malfunction code, and an occasional misfire on cylinders 1,3,5,7 (bank1). I replaced the VVT solenoid on the passenger side with no changes.
I replaced the Oil Control Valve on the drivers side, and the car no longer throws the P0171 code and never misfires anymore. This job was easy as well and the oil control valve i got brand new for $30 on ebay!
Next, I did some transmission work. If you are having any hard shifting issues or vibrations I would look into the tranny mount. Did that today and the old one had not been changed in 254k and was in two pieces.I also have done around 5 drain and fills over time, refilling with Toyota type IV fluid, I also dropped the transmission pan and changed the transmission filter/strainer. Car is running and driving great. My transmission shifts like new!
Differential drain and fill next!
I also replaced the Coolant Temp Sensor, cleaned the MAF, the air mix path, and the throttle body.

my 99 ls400 has just the P0171 code. I poured in some injector cleaner, since i figured maybe its a clogged injector, but im not so sure this will do anything. How did you diagnose this code for the oil control valve, and how hard was it to do this?

The VVT solenoid and Oil control valve were both $35 parts, and pretty easy to install, that's why I tried replacing them
