The factory paint is luckily still nice. I believe the rust was caused because the fender was literally covered in tiny dents/chips, not sure exactly what happened but the paint was chipped in lots of places and it rusted in all the places where the paint/clear coat was completely gone. I believe the car has been in CA its whole life.

So what happened when you went back for smog? I'm assuming it passed? I had an experience with a new smog shop a few weeks ago. Soon as the guy saw my K&N filter he goes, "uh oh, can't do it unless you have the CA-Compliant decal - and you don't have one for this modified intake". I calmly informed the tech that this was not an "intake" and just an air filter with the airbox deleted but he wouldn't budge. I left and probably should have just went back to the guy I always go to but since his shop was across town and "new guy" pissed me off, I went back home and called K&N (they are in SoCal) and they immediately sent me an e-mail which explained why my part was simply a filter and not an "intake". I went back to the shop and showed him the e-mail and the dude was like "oh, ok, I guess it's alright". Noob.
