Is there any way to test the knock sensors ?.... My car has 285,000km... Would you ever just replace them as a matter of course ?

u asked if u replace them as a matter of course...if ur starter fails then yes.

IF you get a code for a knock sensor then replace it. If your changing your starter then you MIGHT consider testing/changing knock sensors. Other than that I don't know how you would test them without going through the trouble of removing the intake manifold.
