How did you find it?
Was it a private party?
What issues / problems were you looking out for?
I have heard that the starter and the speedometer are problem areas.
I found the car on craigslist, private party.I wanted to purchase a black exterior and was willing to pay up to $ 7,500 with up to 150,000 miles.
My main concern was whether or not the timing belt package had been replaced on any vehicle having 90K + miles.
In my search I'd come across vehicles with the ultra package, which is highly desired. I then felt that since the vehicles I was looking at were 20-25 years old there might be more potential problems and repairs with navigation, vibrating seats, etc.I ended up buying a "Basic" model, exceptionally clean, in a color combination I like with 60,000 miles for $ 5,250.
I never heard about starter/speedometer problems, but we are discussing older cars here.
I took the car to my mechanic for a thorough inspection and had him replace the rack & pinon, oil change and computerized alignment for a total of $ 500.
If you register with MyLexus.com you can enter the VIN# of any vehicle and get the maintenance history of that vehicle.
Don't be in a rush to purchase, have craigslist, auto trader email you with any new listings and see all interesting vehicles on day 1, There are a lot of buyer's vying for a quality Lexus, and not enough of them available.
Good luck in your search. You'll be very happy soon.
