Default LS400 Trunk Release Cover Broken

Guys, this appears to be a common problem with LS400s. The plastic cover for the trunk release broke off, leaving the metal latch. The latch still works, but it obviously looks bad without the factory trunk cover missing. Do you know how to permanently fix this from reoccurring or is it a defect I must live with? I'm sure age and plastic hardening has something to do with this, but oddly enough the fuel door release (next to the trunk release) has NOT broken. Thank-you in advance

I have not heard many on here complain about broken trunk release covers so I would hardly call it a defect. Best solution is to find one in the junkyard.

I own three LS400's and all three had broken trunk release covers when I bought them.

I hear you but Ive been around this forum for a while and not heard many members complain about broken covers. Lot of other cars use this same design. Just look in the JY for a replacement.

Watch out for a hair line crack running from the graphic cars rear wheel to the edge of the release switch. Two I ordered from ebay were cracked and had to be returned. In my opinion, the switch covers are a defect.

When I bought my 97 mine was missing too. I went to the JY and got 3 tan spares since I knew it'll most likely happen in the future LOL.

UNCNOR, yeah it is an issue with these LS400s. I have looked in JY and guess what?? Broken trunk latch covers, imagine that....I appreciate your feedback and I may be forced to buy OEM or NOS.

I'll vouch for it being pretty common. I've seen it on one personal car and lots and lots and lots of junkyard cars. The problem arises when the operator simply pulls on the switch too hard. I'm pretty easy on the switch. Some drivers pull themselves out of the seat on the way out the door by the dang trunk switch. What do you think is going to happen. I don't think it's much of a design flaw but it is certainly pretty common with gorilla fingered operators.

You can try to superglue the piece back on if you still have it otherwise you'll be pulling one from a yard or buying one off eBay.

This is what I was thinking also.
