Default a/c not working

The compressor is running. I have put a gauges set on the high and low side, was in the red 250 and the low side was 80, what do I need to check next?

Not sure what year your car is but 1st thing to always do is check for any codes to give you an idea what the problem is. If it's a 90-94 this will help you get started. http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/air/accodes.html

I've had a similar issue with those readings on the gauges, and it came down to the compressor being plain old worn out from years of use
This can be confirmed or ruled out by a highly experienced mechanic.

High pressure the compressor is working. It is like a restriction in the expansion valve. And would likely mean getting to the evaporator, removing the dash etc. And if both the engine not running pressures are way over 80, the system is then over filled.
