Considering a 95 w 200k in limp mode...
Any advice appreciated. I have a line on a 95 w 200k for cheap. I've not seen it in person but here's what I do know; The interior and exterior look like they are in phenomenal condition. Motor runs fine. She said it all the sudden would not go faster than 20mph and tranny was slipping. She claims a mechanic told the owner the transmission was toast but only test drove the car and didn't really investigate to deep. Said she had another car and didn't want to invest to fix the Lexus. I can grab it for $500. I've always wanted a first gen LS but can't really drop a ton of $ right now. Would you guys take the chance with the hopes that the tranny isn't shot and it could be a cheap fix (solenoid, CPU capacitors, or something similar)? Thanks for the input.

200k miles is a bit high but if its in top shape and no body or paint or interior mess ups. Then its a pretty ok deal. Maybe she will even go below the 500 too. It could just be low on fluid too. Transmissions are easy doesn't Banshee live close by?

To be honest this is my first post here so I'm not sure who is nearby. I am however very familiar with Toyota though as I currently have a 97 4runner and a 2010 Tundra. Have had several others prior also. I am going to look at it in person tomorrow morning. If the pics I've seen are proper than the tires alone are worth $500.

The transmissions are one of the most trouble free items in these cars, the thing that will mess them up is using the wrong fluid. And if that one is messed up I bet they didn't use the right fluid. Ask what they used.

In case of the real limp home mode, the ECU limits the maximum rpm 2000rpm and the ignition timing is set BTDC 10 degrees only. Even in that situation, the car runs faster than 20mph.

Well thank you for the input gents. Unfortunately the photos were a little outdated or strategically taken and the seller was not being completely honest. The "pristine" interior had tears and the beautiful exterior had been rattle can painted in spots. Also, the car wouldn't even start. Bummed because I wasted 2 hours and a half tank of fuel to get the truth. Don't know what the point in being shady was. Oh well I will keep looking.

It's a shame people do that in their ads. What they think when we get there we won't notice the difference? Sorry you wasted your time, but good luck in your search. These cars really do last a long time, but need to get a candidate that has been taken care of and it might cost you more than $500... but if you like the way they drive and handle and last, then additional funds won't bother you.
