1997 Lexus LS400 Newbie with a sound question
Hello,
I went through the Mother Thread for sound and saw that a lot of the stuff is dated.
1 - I have the standard sound system.
2 - I would like to relocate the temperature controls in order to put the double din higher.
3 - My budget is $1000
4 - I don't need NAV
5 - Not looking for competition sound
6 - I live in NJ
What I need:
1 - A recommendation of a Double Din head that is capable of having a backup camera, USB inputs, iPod/Android Integration, and bluetooth.
2 - All necessary brackets and adapters
3 - Recommendations on switching out all the speakers including the sub. Not looking for competition sound. Just want something clear, with a decent bass response.
4 - I just want to swap out the sub. Not looking to add a cabinet.
5 - I have a Kenwood 600watt 4 channel amp that could be used for this install.
6 - Want to be able to swap out speakers with zero to minimal modifications.
Please provide links to what people are doing currently. I hope the community can help me out! I can't stand the sound of these blown out speakers! lol

I did something similar with my -95 LS400 (same sound system) some 8 years ago. Even though I didn't go for a double DIN head unit, there are adapters available for both single and double DIN. I also swapped all the speakers and made my own brackets, replacing the small speaker boxes in the doors with MDF brackets for 6.5" speakers. (If I was to do it again, I would go for good 5 1/4" speakers and fit them into the original speaker boxes.) Just see to that you replace the treble tweeters in the front door posts for a couple of good ones and you should be fine.
I did find me a nice small but effective 12" speaker (a prevous version of Rockford Fosgate R2S-1X12) sub box which is about 3 to 5" thick slanted (and 14" X 26"). I simply took the old subwoofer out and didn't replace it with anything, else you can custom fit any open air 10" speaker, which is well documented. The original subwoofer is 8" which is on the small side, but you can replace it for as little as $29. Check http://99carstereo.com/best-free-air-subwoofers-review/
You do have to read up on which wires to use from the original system, which you will find both behind the old head unit and also by the amp under the right front seat. You do have to make this yourself, as there are no kits or converters for the Gen2 LS's.
On relocating the temp controls, you do have to make some custom modifications to the panels and adapters, which can be found in a thread on exactly that subject.
