91 ls400 startup. No compression?
Hey guys. So to add to the to do list of my project car....today when I went to start it to move it out of the garage in order to change he fuel pump,it would just spin on startup. Like there was no combustion occurring. Started and drove fine yesterday . I figured it was just dead and thought well I might as well keep trying. After about 15 seconds it began to sputter and firing. Eventually it started and pumped out a ton of white smoke for 5 minutes.
So I guess im hunting a compression leak...

Yeah fun stuff, I have one that's sat for awhile and won't start either. So now the fun begins and I got too many other things I need to do just don't need another project.
The white smoke deal sounds like ECU problems. Like my mess you need to check fuel pressure, then igniters signals etc. confirm the compression since you suspect it. Also a broke timing belt.

Have no means to test fuel presuure at this stage but am doing a compression test today and changing all the plugs while im at it.
I did notice that a small hose on the intake is broken from the bigger hose. Will see what I can do about that.
The big issue is that today it started fine! like there never was a problem at all. Makes it so much harder to diagnose the issue. I know there is a compression issue as it is just turning over way to fast and takes about 5 seconds to start.
Yesterday, when it wouldnt start I heard air popping at the bottom of the engine bay so ill get under there and see what I can find

Sounds to me like your timing might be off. My 93 did that where it would run good (not great) for a while, then just ran like crap for a few days and then run good again. But I didn't have any white smoke.Turned out the timing belt jumped one tooth.
