Default Transmission issue

Hello, I recently purchased a 1998 LS400, one of the big issues I have is that the transmission wont go into gear unless its warm. Any advice on this? I've been searching for a spare TCU to troubleshoot with but can't seem to find one. All help is appreciated!

How many miles? Do you know the service history of the vehicle? Sounds like the trans fluid isnt pumping or building pressure which could indicate a bad pump, low or poor fluid. or just a trashed trans.

Simply check the ATF level. As far as I experience, a 90-00 tends to need the ATF at the Max level.

Checked the ATF level, and it was low as hell, filled it up and it pretty much worked. It still has a slight bit of trouble getting into gear but nothing like it was before. I think this week I'll change the filter and put all new fluid in. I'll post again when its all complete.

The original cork gaskets on the transmission filer/screen may be leaking. ...consider replacing the entire screen assembly.

Also consider replacing the transmission temperature sensor (resistor based) (part of internal transmission solenoid wiring harness...~$50....can be done without hauling transmission.)

Be sure to purchase transmission specific Toyota FIPG. (Do Not use aftermarket crap)

Also...your transmission fluid is probably tired and plenty soupy kimosabee...

Drain pan several times and add fresh Toyota type IV and you should notice incremental improvements. (About 3-4 qts each drain and refill)

Acquire new drain plugs and several crush washers from Lexus.

DO NOT let any slipshod Service Writer or mechanic convince you to do a pressure flush...bad idea..

Please report your results.
