BJ,
Go to your local Lexus dealer and have them run a service history report for you in the service department. If any service was done at the dealer, they'll be able to tell you what & when (date and mileage) it was performed on your LS based on the VIN.
I did this on my LS before I bought it and found that they'd replaced the front brakes, had done major services, etc.

Timing belt, water pump, tensioner, cam seals, gaskets, caps, rotors, wires $1485.xx with labor
This is through my best friend who is ASE certified. Going back for the power steering pump, alternator, starter, brakes, the infamous ball joints upfront, tranny fluid , differential fluid...looking to spend about $1500.xx more.
Oil change was free, radiator flush was free.

ok. went to the local lex dealer dto get an oil change $39.95, ans to pull up the serice history. well it seems the last owner did to the 60 or 90K. the dealer charges $998 for the 60K and $750 for the timing belt, no water pump. i wonder if the ls is really that hard to work on like my twin turbo z??? can i trust a local shop???

The thing is that when you change your timing belt, they have to take soo much crap out of the engine that its always a good idea to replace what can be replaced when its already opened up. Like with the timing belt, the water pump is right there and if you have the 1st Gen LS might as well replace the water pump. And with that the seals have to be replaced, gaskets and so forth.
As for trusting a local shop, unless you know the mechanic personally. If you dont it is up to you to decide. I would rather pay my friend the $78/hour labor charges than the dealers $100+/hour charges just for the timing belt.
I was quoted at the dealer for a 90k service of $485, this is only the parts, labor he said takes about 10-15 hours....
Here's the breakdown on what was done to my car:
Timing belt
idler pulley low
idler pulley high
water pump
cam seal
crank seal
coolant flush
thermostat and gasket
ignition cap
ignition rotor
labor was 11 hours mainly because of the water pump placement.
total $1429.86
