Default Here's what happens to a timing belt when an idler pulley seizes up

Luckily, it's a 91, so the engine was fine, but it really made for a lot of cleaning when I took everything apart. Got the new belt and water pump in, and she runs as good as new. Also replaced the plugs, wires, caps & rotors while I was in there.

I'm assuming this service had never been done before at about 86k miles, but at 26 years old, it was well past due.

Wow, that looks like a mess. Glad it was a 91 to minimize the damage. Great job on the clean up and install. Look like you're on the road again...

A stunning mess. My 1990 silently came to dead stop in a snow storm on I-79 in West Virginia due to a frozen idler pulley that bisected the belt very cleanly. Yours looked like it fought to the bitter end.

That makes a mess! Good job for keeping the car roadworthy.

Man that looks bad. Just to clarify, car only has 86k and it seized up?

Are 91's non-interference?
If so, when did interference start then? vvti/'98? Just curious...
Glad you got it back on the road!

Yep, 138k KM, so about 86k miles. And interference started in 95 I believe. They bumped the compression up a little bit that year.

Correct, '95 for the LS400 is the start of the Interference engines.

Man, that was a heck of a clean-up job. Looks great! Did you buy a timing belt kit, or just the belt and pump?

I used this kit.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008EEYWXK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008EEYWXK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Water pump was Aisin, pullies were Koyo & NSK, tensioner was NTN, belt was Mitsuboshi, so they were all quality Japanese made parts. Everything seemed to be equal to OEM in terms of quality.

Thanks for the info! I got my kit @ timingbeltkit.com. They shipped for free and all the parts were high-quality Japanese made.
