WHY do automakers do this??? I've seen it on my Volvos too and I can't stand it!

I share in your frustration. when designing a car the manus must factor in the market majority, so function will always overpower form.
Europeans do this a lot and Lexus was benchmarking the S-class when they designed this car.

Front suspension stroke is quite long, the wheels have to clear the fenders even when fully loaded up and turned at a high angle (ie freeway onramp).

searching for stock 98+ LS400 I came across these photos. the rear sits a lot higher than mine in all of them! a bit more even with the front arch. none of those have the air suspension option.

I'll have the dealer see what they think about it but any other ideas as to why mine would be lower even after new struts and springs? i made sure to use the rubber spacer/boot properly. I can get about 2 fingers between the top of the tire and the inside of the arch. current tires are 225/60/16s

you need to just measure the height and stop going off pictures.

Factory ride height per my '00 FSM

HF: Measured value of the front vehicle height
FR: Measured value of the rear vehicle height

So according to this the front is SUPPOSED to be higher than the back by ~1inch.

And here's how you measure:
