Default First oil change and filter (FOR ME)

When replacing the filter do I need to fill it up? I know you lube it but do I fill it up or install without any in it? And do I do this before or after I change and put the new oil in, thanks.

No need to put any oil in it. Just rub a little on the seal. Do not over tighten it.
Wow, I cant even remember my first oil change. I musta been about 10 or 12.

I prefill mine half way as it aids in getting the pressure up faster upon initial startup. doesn't hurt!

I do my filter first, remove old and put new.
then I drain the oil and fill that afterwards.
if I reversed that order I would be contending with a full pan of oil as I tried to remove the filter...messy!

i used to just put some around the seal, never filled the filter... i never understood if that's a requirement... but i guess it's same as when you change the oil, start car for a min to build pressure then check levels again since you know the filter will have taken up the space and you will need to top top off a lil.

It certainly cannot hurt, but not needed IMHO. I did this (pre-fill cartridge housing) on my Porsche, but my Lexus V8 will not be run nearly as hard my flat 6 was and those few seconds needed to build pressure due to an empty filter is inconsequential.

Also, I have always seen two fill amounts for an oil change. I think mine is 5.6 qts. w/o a filter change and 5.9 with, which leads me to believe a filter will hold about 11 oz.

There are different levels of thought on prefilling the filter. Both have some good points.

I ended up just filling halfway and putting it on, and let it run for a few minutes and it seems fine
