1998 LS400 Auto Lock ?
Hello,
Does anyone know if a 1998 Lexus LS400, can have the doors auto lock when put in gear and Auto Unlock when put in Park? If so can one do it myself and how do you program it to do so?
Thanks in advance!

Did '98 Lexus models have Lexus Personalized Settings? My '07 IS had this, but only the dealer could change the LPS; autolock/unlock was one of the settings.
Of course, posting your question in the subforum for the 98 LS may get you a quicker answer.

I think it has personalized settings but no sure, as the previous owner somehow kept locking her keys in the car and I think the settings were changed. I appreciate you reply, how do I get to the 1998 LS400 Forum you advised as I am new to this site? Thanks again!

Did you look in the owner's manual?
Changing this setting may involve some funny combination of pressing and holding various buttons in the car (like pressing and holding the master lock switch on the armrest while pressing some other button). This is how the setting was changed on one of my older Camrys (2002, 2006? I don't remember).

main answer is yes, but dealer has to do it. i guess you could do it but i imagine it's still cheaper to have the dealer do it than buy the high level scan tool required.
there's a whole bunch of stuff that can be changed besides the door auto locking. like: sensitivity of the auto headlights, whether or not the A/C compressor automatically activates when you hit auto, whether or not the A/C compressor activates when you hit defrost, auto tilt away of the steering wheel, etc... give me a bit and i'm sure i can find the official document somewhere, but if you go through the owners manual pretty much anywhere where it says see your dealer for assistance is a customizable setting that can be changed.

It can definitely be done, but like Strock said dealer has to do it. Toyota dealer should be able to do it.
Back then they were called C-BEST settings.

I've posted the attached document several times over the years. Auto Unlock can be set one of two ways. I don't see a gear shift or speed based auto locking feature listed for the 98-00 LS400.
Maybe this doc could be put in "UCF20/21 1995 - 2000 LS400 FaQ(Frequently asked Questions)"
Edit: Stroock639, you beat me to it. I'll bet that is a copy of the doc I posted in the past.

I'm almost certain my 98 LS400 locked the doors when shifting to park or when underway...

i'll always be jealous that you've gotten to drive all the LS models since 1989 when they were brand spankin new. the 1999 LS in showroom fresh condition right off the boat from japan must've been so breathtakingly amazing! driving around with my grandpa (like maybe 3 years ago), he said that now, some noise gets in. but that when he bought it in 99, no noise got in. it must've just been complete automotive perfection...

Clean all the seals well, clean the jambs well where they seat, then using rubber gloves massage the grease into all the seals and weatherstripping, don't forget the trunk and the hood, and use a Q tip for the window seals. It will absolutely have an impact.

You should treat all your window and door seals with Shin Etsu grease. You can thank me later:
