New to me 1998 ls400 sunroof not opening
Hello all,
Current 430 owner crossing into the 400 world. I found a real clean 98 for sale on Craigslist with all major services just done, no oil leaks, brand new Michelin Mx4 tires, and insanely clean paint for very cheap. Car has 200k on it now.
The only thing on the whole car that doesn’t work is the sunroof. It’s closed properly now, i.e. no leaks or wind noise, but it doesn’t make any attempt to slide or tilt open. Just downloaded the service manual and the section that mentions getting to the relay and motor does not look like a fun job, especially with a 20 year old headliner. Rear door windows work, so it’s not the fuse. Has anyone ever heard of a bad switch on these cars?

They could have unplugged the switch; I had an issue where my tilt stopped working(old, crusty grease) and I did that to stop myself from using it until I could re-grease everything. It took me a couple of hours on a cold, rainy afternoon to get it shut; I didn't want to repeat that experience until I fixed it. IIRC, to get to the switch I think it's a plastic cover and a few screws.

No dice unfortunately. I’m going to try and find one at a junkyard tomorrow. I noticed the swtitch itself can be completely removed separate of the dome light assembly. I’m wondering if this switch was shared on the earlier 400s

So if anyone is curious— the sunroof switch from a 1994 LS400 swaps into a 98 as well as the sunroof switch from a 2001 GS300. What doesn’t swap is one from a 1990 LS400 or a switch from my 05 LS430. In all of these applications the switch looks identical on the outside however.
Still, this didn’t fix my issue as I guess my switch is fine. Is this for sure a motor issue? Or is it more likely the relay?

If there isn't any mechanical problem and the fuse "30A PWR" is OK, the motor assembly unit below will be needed to change. The relay and the control logic circuit is in inside the unit. Regarding the fuse "30A PWR", it also supplies the DC to the steering control and as long as your steering column works, it simply means that the fuse is OK.

Not the news I wanted to hear but I appreciate the response! Thanks so much. I'll take some pics when I decide to do it for future people in the same predicament
