I recently drained/refilled my atf fluid on my 98 LS400. At normal operating temps after a 10 mile or so drive my atf dipstick is reading exactly halfway between the top and bottom of the HOT portion of the stick. Is this normal or do i need to add/remove some fluid. Car shifts and drives great. Just curious where other 98-00 LS400's are reading on the dipstick. attached is a pic for refererence. this is a stock photo i found on the net. but my reading is exactly the same.
Looks good to me. Since the owner's manual does not give instructions on how to check the transmission fluid, we are kind of left guessing. I take mine for a 15-20 mile run on a 70 to 80 degree day (longer if it is colder outside). I come back home (or park on a flat surface somewhere) and slowly shift it through each gear i.e. reverse (wait 3 seconds), drive (wait 3 seconds), 4th wait, 3, 2, 1 and then back up to 2 (wait), 3, 4, drive, reverse and then park. Next, I wait a few more minutes (2 or 3), pull out the dip stick, wipe it off, reinsert, wait a minute, pull out and inspect. It can be frustrating, especially if it is overfilled when you get the car like mine was. I took out over a quart of fluid (a little at a time) i.e. check, double check, remove a 1/4 of a quart, check, freak out , recheck, remove some more, etc. I've purchased many cars with too much fluid in the transmission--not a good thing!
looks good to me as well. if you're OCD like me I would try and get it up to the top line but it's very hard to do with expansion of heat.
as stated, do not overfill either.
