Default Castrol 0W40 oil?

1998 LS 400, 220K miles.
What do you all think about 0W40 synthetic Castrol? Will it harm or confuse the VVT?
Walmart is now selling this weight oil. Also they have a small selection of Toyota OE oil filters.

Thanks,
Jim

why is 0W-40 even being considered? 5W-30 is all it specifies, 10W-30 if you're in a consistently warmer area

also you're gonna want the 90915-YZZD3 filter

Just use the factory recommended oil weight. End of story.

Default Determining correct oil for ls400

Is your engine consuming oil?
Otherwise, 0W-40 may be a bit too thick at operating temperature..

Do Not Use 10W-30 oil. 1970's oil tech

Should you feel the need to proceed with factory recommended 5W-30 oil, then use synthetic.

The contemporary solution is 0W-30 synthetic oil, which was not available in the '90s.
Excellent cold start characteristics.

Although used in contemporary Lexus' Do Not Use 0W-20 oil.....
-20W lacks necessary shear strength at operating temperature.

To better understand what the first and second set of numbers signify,

Default Outdated Owners Manual Oil Recommendations

Advances in engine oils render owners manual recommendations of twenty to thirty years ago obsolete.

The purpose of the link was to provide reasoned information for educated decision towards selection of best engine oil.

OP: the link outlines why 0W-30 (produced in synthetic only) is a better solution than 5W-30....and why 10W-30 is not ideal in any climate.

Any reason you are considering 0W-40?

Thank you for the advice, guys. I will go with the 5W30 synthetic.
Was only considering 0W40 for quicker oil flow at start-up.
