coolant tank question
I noticed in this hot weather in San Diego, that whenever I work the car hard driving it passed 4500 rpm - redline, after popping the hood, i see that teh coolant resevoir bubbles out a little coolant..
After a couple weeks you can notice the dried up coolant that turns all white around the area?
Am i making sense here? The Temp guage has always read normal... is this a possible problem with the temperature regulator or whatever its called

Actually, that's normal for it to overflow a bit if you drive your car extremely hard then shut it off immediately. Your thermostat is working just fine so don't worry about it. Just keep an eye on it because you might have to add antifreeze if you continue driving in that style. I would suggest not to redline it because you are doing damage that will eventually catch up to you.

No, it is not normal.
You got a micro crack in your coolant reservoir. You can either buy a new reservoir or fix it with some special plastic glue. If you decide to glue or patch it, you better do it now since the crack is still small. It's a fairly common problem on 1st gen LS.

Where?
Check those spots that got the white dry coolant. Usually the cracks are right under the white goo mess. You need to clean the spots real good then check them under bright sun light for cracks. Look carefully. Most of them are even smaller than a hair line crack that make you wonder how could they leak? The answer is "pressure & expansion" - think about the high + hot pressure in the plastic container...
