17x8 MSW rims on my 97
When I checked on new 16-inch V-rated tires for the LS, there were few choices, so to have more, I opened a bag of worms and ordered a set of MSW 17x8's (40 mm offset) from Tirerack.com. I test fit the rim today. It clears the brakes fine. But gosh, it looks wide, and I'm wondering if the 8 inch rim is too much. It may stick out from the wheel well too much; yea, it's hard to tell without a tire on it. What do you think? I'm wondering if I should have chosen a 7.5 or 7 inch wheel instead? Another question; Tirerack's calculator comes up with a 225/55R17 for this setup (stock is 225/60R16). I noticed some of you run +1 with 235/55R17's on LS430 rims. Is Tirerack just being conservative to guarantee no rubs?

You are good. That fitment is fine/conservative once the car is on the ground weighted. Nice looking wheel too. A 235/50-17 is 26.3", 235/55 at 27.2" while the 225/55 is 26.7". Stock 225/60-16 is 26.2" diameter. I'd suggest the 235/50 but any of those sizes work and you'll have to mentally adjust for the speedometer differences.

Thanks for the reassurance. I took a few measurements. The MSW rim protrudes 5/8 inches more than stock on the outside, and 3/8 inches more than stock on the inside. I was a bit worried about that 5/8 inch increase. The stock 16 inch wheel outer width is 204 mm, and the offset is 45 mm (that's by my measurements; probably within +- 1 mm). The MSW wheel outer width is 230 mm, with a 41 mm offset.
The speedo reading at 60 MPH for each: 235/50-17 is 59.3, 235/55 is 61.3, and 225/55 is 60.4. So speedo error doesn't seem to be much of a factor. By the way, everybody may already know this, but for those that don't, the outside width of a rim is very close to one inch more than the specified width.
