1993 ls400 replacing obsolete power steering tubing
Friends 1993 LS400 has several power steering fluid leaks.
Rubber tubing and seals are the usual suspects.
The power steering pump and alternator were replaced about 50,000 miles or 15 years ago with OEM, so acquired a Toyota P.S. pump rebuild kit.
Located a rebuilder in Chicago who did an excellent job of cleaning and rebuilding for $100...beats anything aftermarket.
The hydraulic lines are all discontinued, however Javier at McGrath Lexus had 3 of OEM return line that runs from the steering reservoir. (44406D on Lexus parts diagram)
Major production: about 6 hours work.
Extracting this line required removal of the right headlamp assembly, the antilock/traction units, P.S. pump cam cover, alternator and tensioner assembly.
They built the car around this line.
Happily 2nd generation resolved this access problem.
Begrudgingly ordered the main pressure line for pump to rack from Rock Auto. (44410)
Could not locate 44406E and 44406F - accepting recommendations.
The steering rack is next on the list.
Will go with Lexus rebuilt unit....everything inside is replaced...including inner tie rods, so you know what you are getting...
A few images of work area taken by owner who could not believe the disassembly required.
