1993 LS400 with strange engine issues
This is gonna be a long one.
I have a 1993 LS400 with issues I haven't been able to figure out for about a year now. When I got the car, I had no idea what I was doing - it seemed to very slowly be losing power, and my first thought was to replace the fuel pump. For some reason. Fortunately, that fixed the issue. Right up until the ancient fuel filter exploded, because I hadn't replaced that. After that, the car kept losing power and killing fuel pumps for about a year, and also had some pretty bad spark knock at idle (but would idle normally besides that). Rail pressure was always reading as too high, so I figured the injectors needed to be replaced because the crap from the dead filter had clogged them (and it had). I replaced the injectors four months ago, but the car still spark knocked, now wouldn't idle right at all, and still had no power. Coming back to present day; I haven't worked on it much, except to replace every vacuum hose in the engine bay and put some RTV on the breather as it was cracked. This seems to have fixed my spark knock issues, but the car will only idle correctly for short periods before getting lumpy again. It still has no power, and there's a little bit of white smoke that comes from the exhaust that doesn't smell like coolant. Frankly I have no idea what to at this point. I'd think it has a bad replacement injector if it weren't for the complete lack of power. The ECU is from 2016, I've tried opening it up but it doesn't unfold like the old ones do. I've been driving my project car for the last four months but it now has rodknock (not actually my fault for once) and I need a car to get to work.

GOOD NEWS!
I'm an idiot, the ECU is marked December 14, 1992. And sure enough, I managed to (extremely carefully) pry the top board off of the case and get to see the inside. Many of the capacitors are, obviously, smoked. I'll be ordering the capacitor set and seeing if any phone repair places near me are willing to repair it.

Hi ... there is a member here who rebuilds these ECU's ... i think it is LScowboyLS .... a little looking around here and you might find a few other options on this rebuild as well ... also, if I remember correctly, LScowboy has a FaceBook page ... he has quite a few photos of the various units he has done .....
Let us know how it goes ...... ; )
