I think the one symptom that really got me moving in the direction of the ECU was remembering we had to try 4 different scan tools before we got one to connect with the car. The simpler scan tool would connect and show some data but the more advanced ones (Snap-On/Matco) would not. The new capacitors are supposed to be here Saturday and I found a friend that has more experience with this kind of thing to help me with the repair. Really hoping the board is still good.
Question on a replacement ECU, do I need to look for the exact ECU my car came with or can I use one from a later 96? Mine is the 89661-50303.

A 89661-50302 may have some minor issues but most people wouldn't notice problems.

That's what got me to changing out my ECU finally on my 94. But for me it was only a paper clip or a piece of wire. All the times I checked the diagnostic box under the hood I never got anything to come up so I just blew it off thinking it was corroded and the clip wasn't getting contact. So I finally tried the one under dash (was pretty hard after neck surgery) and still nothing, then I knew I needed another ECU. I wish I listened to people alot sooner, but I'm stubborn.

Got the new capacitors put in today. Started the car up for a few minutes, definitely a serious improvement so far but its still running a bit rough. There's a few factors other than potential board damage that could be contributing to that so I'm not totally surprised. The car hasn't been driven since late December, it has an exhaust leak, a secondary 02 sensor that's died, and my heater control valve has developed a leak. First to fix on that list is the heater control valve so that I can take it for a test drive and not risk overheating. If anyone knows a good place to pick one up from that's going to come in under what I'll pay at Lexus I'd appreciate some direction. Most of the usual parts places I've checked don't carry it.
