Just bought a 96 ls400, how do i pass the smog check?

Make sure there's no leaky oil say from the valve covers or whatever, they don't like that kind of thing in excess too much, maybe wash it if there's any, they don't like after market engine parts of any kind (intake air cleaners like K&N or similar), other than that if its maintained routinely and running decent, no check engine lights, you should be fine. These cars are generally quite good at passing smog tests, good engines.

How is it running presently? Did you get/have a maintenance history? Might post that so we have some history go go by. The seller is supposed to do the smog before passing title on a roadworthy/registered vehicle. Now if you bought it as-is under different terms or it was a non-op vehicle you have owned, it's on you. Check for any error codes. If you don't get an OBD connection you'll have to get the ECU fixed. If the ECU has not had the capacitors replaced that is going to need to be done anyhow. Aside from those potential areas, if the car had regular maintenance it should be good.
