Default New exhaust dampers reduce vibration and upgrade with ls430 damper shields

There are two exhaust dampers near the front flanges of the LS400 Y-Pipe.

Time, elements and heat have taken their toll on the rubber element of 1999 LS400 exhaust dampers, so determined to replace.

Noticeable NVH reduction in steering wheel.and shifter.

Had a look on the 2001-2003 LS430 Y-Pipe dampers, which, unlike LS400, employ "Exhaust Insuators'.

Pictured: 1999 LS400 Exhaust Damper (two required).
Left and right 2001 LS430 exhaust damper insulator. (One depicted)

LS430 insulators isolate damper elements from exhaust pipe/engine heat, reduce wind drag and further help isolate the transmission from radiant exhaust/engine heat.

LS400 Exhaust Damper. Fiber washers on both sides of mounting plate. LS400 dampers are mounted with damper facing ahead of bracket.

Left side Exhaust Insulator installed. Encloses damper and shields the transmission pan from heat. The transmission dipstick tube is inow better isolated from radiant exhaust heat.

A view of exhaust damper nestled inside Insulator. LS400 dampers are mounting forward of bracket while LS430 dampers sweep rearward...

Underside view forward

LS430 Y-Pipe mounted exhaust damper and Insulator.

Unlike LS400, LS430 exhaust dampers sweep back. Am investigating whether adequate clearance at transmission pan on LS400 for swept back mounting to make better use of insulators. Will advise.

Mine was rattling around and I removed it.
its interesting to see what we can incorporate from newer LS's to our older ones.
Just installed a ls430 alternator today, after an ebay junkyard ls400 one was dead on arrival. Figured the ls430 is less prone to PS leaking issues, maybe the alternator would be in better shape.

Did you add third mounting ear mounting bolt?

Yes. Although my local Toyota dealer had then for much more than what guys here paid. Out the door for bolt and nut was around $8
