Help! 96 LS400 long start when warm!
Help! I've just purchased a 96 LS400 with around 205K on it. Everything works great other than this long start condition. The car has to crank (very strongly) for about 4-5 seconds before it'll fire up, and will have a rough/surging idle for a few seconds normally. Only when warm. Once its started and running for a little bit it's just fine. Slight fuel smell after it fires up too. Only code it has is P0171 which is driver side O2 sensor. I figure this doesnt have much to do with my problem. I'm suspecting fuel filter, as the car sat for a little bit and the guy had to change the fuel pump as it wouldnt run much at all. This has been going on since. Any ideas?! I'm hoping for fuel filter, but let me know what you guys think.

The electrolytic capacitors used by Denso have demonstrated age related issues.
Happily, they can be affordably replaced.
Start there.

Sounds like a coolant temp sensor to me! Not sure on the 96's but if it is a MAP engine, none MAF engine then the coolant temp sensor is one of the major inputs into how much fuel it dumps into the engine. Should be a quick easy test with a scan tool, if that data can be read.

i would double check to make sure the fuel pump was installed correctly. then i would do a simple tune up - change the spark plugs to eliminate that and make sure the plug wires are on tight! a long crank tells me there is not enough fuel or adequate spark.
then you can check your air idle control valve after all of that doesn't solve much:

such a beauty at 200k!
