Default OEM Navigation Retrofit

I have a '96 LS400, and a lack of common sense, would it be possible to retrofit the OEM navigation from a '98-00 LS into mine? I know in Japan they already had navigation units as early as '96 and after browsing the forums I see that you need to do some rewiring but I'm still confused on the possibility of it.

Unfortunately it's not possible. The design was changed to interface a new bus system called BEAM and you can't use a 98-00 one for your 96.

Having had the OEM navigation in my old 1998 LS400, I'd strongly recommend against doing this if it is possible. Yes it works but is so basic and has such low resolution you'd be VERY quickly past the "hey cool I've got navigation now" phase to "why the hell did I spend the time and money to do this??" phase. No updates for many years, sensitive to temperatures, tiny screen with big blocky graphics.

Suggest you find somebody with a 98-00 LS or GS with the nav who is selling and do a test drive to play with it if you haven't already.

EDIT looks like Yamae already helped dissuade things!

Hmmm, so I guess they must have had the new bus system in Japan before it was available here.

It was mainly just a stupid idea for fun but I have no problem with using outdated tech, the old system doesn't bother me.

I knew a guy who was quite capable to deal with complicated electronics gears. He tried to use a 99 Celsiors's multi display unit to his 97. After his hard work of many days, he was able to use some functions but the air conditioning was not controllable at all. It needed an interface with the BEAN bus system and he needed to give the job up.
