Sticky? Gauge Cluster
Hey all,
I have a 1990 Lexus LS400 and I was wondering if anyone knows what could be the issue with my cluster. One day, not paying attention, I went through a green light which had a 10 mph bump which I went 40-45 over. I did actually get air and my brother and I landed kind of hard. After that, my speedometer needle was dead. My tach, thermometer, and fuel gauge still worked, until I was being an idiot and decided to bang my hand against the top of the dash and it broke the tach and thermometer. Currently, only my fuel gauge works. One funny thing I've noticed is that whenever I get to what sounds like 4500-5000 rpm, the tach needle starts to go up. When I go 80+ mph, the speedometer needle starts to rise. I was thinking it was a tranny speed sensor until the thermometer broke too. Whenever the engine is cold, it's all the way down, and then when the engine gets up to normal temperature, the needle is halfway between cold and right in the middle where it should be. If there is something on the dash I need to replace I will. Been dealing with this for 10,000 miles now.

The needles on the cluster have come off of the motor shafts. This seems to happen over time, due to the design with the cold cathode needles.
From your last sentence, it sounds like your water temperature gauge is fine. I have never played with the fuel and temp needles, and I would recommend not to touch them if and when you disassemble the cluster, especially not the fuel gauge as this will mess up the calibration.
I have made posts about fixing the tachometer and speedometer needle several times, so it will be easier for me to link. Take a look at this post I made:
