Default Suddenly Lost Telescoping

Since I'm not driving much due to holidays and the current state of things I decided to start fixing all the small issues with my 97 LS before either selling it or fixing the power steering for good.
One of these issues is the telescoping control. Some history: a week ago I decided to change out the valve cover gaskets. The telescoping was working fine prior. I had the battery disconnected for about 12 hours during the job (not a very experienced mechanic so it took awhile).
After I reconnected the battery, that is when I lost telescoping. When I push the ****, it makes a singular click after a second of nothing.
Is it a gear binding or does it sound like a shot motor? ECU? I haven't rebuilt mine yet but everything else works.
I tried disconnecting the battery a second time to reset the ECU but that had no effect.
Appreciate any input, driving with the seat all the way forward is not the kind of comfortable experience those who designed the car envisioned.

does the tilt still work? i can't imagine this would in any way be ECU related

Yes the tilt is fine, gets a little sticky when it's hot but been fine now that it's winter. Didn't think it would be the ecu but I'm not familiar with any other electrical governing modules.

Mine too has been doing some funky stuff recently. The preset memory can be set, turn off car and it goes back 'into the dash', then on next start up it doesn't return. The **** is also hit and miss...

I plan to pull ECU out in the next few days to check Caps. Will keep you posted.

I did actually end up solving this. I made another thread about it but the long and short of it is that the motor was dirty inside and cleaning it out brought everything back to life.
What I found out while I was under there was that there's a separate tilt and telescoping control box that exists independently of the ecu so that probably won't do much. Still good to check the caps though.
I'd pull your motor out and open it up, chances are it's full of filth that blocks the contacts and provides resistance to turning. This only works on pre 98 model years though as Ive been told they went to non serviceable ultrasonic motors after that.

Great, will do that then. A good clean out will hopefully fix it.
