1998 -2000 hid headlight and air suspension height control sensor linkage
The HID headlamps employ front and rear suspension mounted height control sensors to maintain optimum headlight beam angle in relation to front and rear suspension height.
These chassis mounted height control sensors are connected to suspension arms via a double-ended ball and socket linkage.
Oftentimes the rubber seal on the upper or lower ball and socket degrades, allowing water and dust to ingress, wearing out the joint, or causing one end to bind or seize.
Have encountered seizing in both front and rear units I have surveyed.
It is possible to check condition by grabbing the linkage in the middle to see if it rotates freely from side-to-side... it not, they can be resuscitated or replaced.
The links are still available as standalone parts from Lexus...about $60..
Anyone with factory air suspension would do well to check these link sub-assemblies forvfreedom of movement...one in each corner.
Right rear height control sensor linkage # 48906-50030. The top slot is indexxed to flats on the sensor shaft, so If not careful when removing affixing nut holding the arm onto flats of sensor shaft, you will overrun the range of sensor sweep and damage it. Use several applications of penetrating oil on fasteners several days beforehand
After rubber seal is compromised, the lubricant dissipates, the ball and socket on link connected at lower control arm will bind or seize...
Image depicting the expired rubber seal. Similar damage as when a ball joint rubber seal fails.
Image depicting four height control linkages. Air suspension requires one on each corner and HID on 1998-2000 LS400 without air suspension option has front front right and right rear only..otherwise the right side sensors perform height control for HID headlamps and air suspension.
