Default 97 timing belt replacement, quarter turn and it doesn’t want to go anymore.

I have a 95 ls400 and I bought a 97 motor to drop in, figured I’d put a new water pump and timing belt on, something happened and now every time I line all the marks up and try to turn it for the valve clearance check, it stops! About a quarter turn from Tdc, I cannot figure out what the deal is, any help would be amazing.

Thinking out loud here. Is it possible you got one or both of the camshafts turned 180 degrees in the wrong direction?

+1. I worry that the piston is hitting the valve.

Take a look at this video for 90-97. Make sure crank, cams, and belt are in the right positions.

good video in showing the timing marks and how they should align. as he stated after 2 revolutions the markings on the belt will NOT line up but the pulley marks should! what i didn't like is that he didn't use a torque wrench to tighten it all together.

for the OP, is it a hard stop? you will have to fight through the compression stroke which might seem like a hard stop but it's just resistance of the compression.

Following on this question, are the spark plugs in or not? If they're not in and you're still feeling resistance then that's not good.
