Another thing I noticed when my EGR went bad, I had terrible gas mileage. Right after I got it changed it went back to normal. For the price of the EGR and labor charges, if it's not broken don't fix it, unless you're doing a starter job you might as well go ahead and replace. Once that starter is out the EGR is very easy to reach.

I believe the EGR valve is the one circled on the driver's side of the manifold. It let's exhaust gas into the intake manifold under certain conditions. And it make's a chocolate mess on the inside of the runners on the intake. Gooey and sticky on a manifold I just picked up for a blower project. On the cheap you can take them off and clean them if you are lucky. The 1st gen. LS has water lines running to it, as does the throttle body. I'm getting ready to clean mine and clean up the engine's looks some at the same time.
On 5.0 Mustangs you can block the pipe with a nickel or something. If you take the valve off and unplug it you will post a code. Some say you need to turn the EGR function off in the EEC then. With a tuner you can see the memory location status so it is designed to be set on or off on a Ford. Many countries don't use an EGR, I don't think you will see one on a JDM engine, at least early 90's.
While the pipe price is ridiculous, it is stainless steel I believe, not aluminum. You are routing 1400 deg.F exhaust through it after all. Seems like lots of AL melts around 1100 deg. I know I had to bend my Mustang one a tiny bit for a blower install and it was darn solid.
