toyota 90915-yzzg1 filters

Just to follow thru here - bear in mind that I was trying to cheap out - not to be better about engine maintenance - still I change the oil every 5k. A visual (ONLY) comparison of the YZZG1 to a Mobil 1 102A filter shows: similarities are the same height, and have the same mounting threads. Differences are G1 has 7 openings which are oval and wider than the Mobil which has 8 round openings, G1 is much lighter in weight than the Mobil, and the mounting ring is round on the G1 whereas it is flat on the Mobil. As I had already bought the Mobil filter I went ahead and used it anyway. There is a substantial cost difference for me as I paid about $1 for each of the G1s and $16 for the Mobil 1 filter so next time I will likely go with the cheapo filter. Thanks for all the assistance here.
As with many replacement parts on an LS400, you will find cheap is not always inexpensive..
YZZG1 and YZZD1 are not recommended by Toyota for V8...
While YZZD3 is highly recommended and inexpensively purchased from Lexus. (if not using an oil extractor, don't forget oil drain plug gasket)
The filter media inside is what matters.
Meanwhile, in view of outpouring of support, perhaps you can post top and bottom images of YZZG1 aside the YZZD3.
Am interested in pursuing a taller Toyota/Denso alternate to the YZZD3 that maintains or exceeds its filtering standards...and images over text better advance that discussion
Thanks

As I understood the YZZ line is an economy part offered to meet Toyota spec. In typical use these YZZ will be fine with regular OCI maintenance. They are still good quality though not like the older 90915 20004 of a past time.
The TRD PTR4300080 is listed for the '98-'07 Landcruiser. This may be an available option to consider if on an oil filter hunt.

Based on bottom cap and seal, it does not appear to be Denso, but similar to K&N and Mobil-1, except the seal lip is not a flat gasket.
The top cap is for wrench, (metric)? but I affix a round magnet to the bottom of the YZZD3
Not Denso. The seal is improvement over flat seals used by other brands, but the bottom shell has only 6 holes vs 8 for YZZD3, should be flat for optimum capacity and anti-drainback function... All TRD had to do was direct Denso to produce a housing taller than YZZD3,.install YZZD3 style filter element, use 8 or perhaps 9 holes - but elongate them.oval as does Ford to increase flow.
Similar to the round magnet used on end of my YZZD3 oil filter. Acquired mine at Home Depot.

I hadn't noticed the O-ring style gasket of the Toyota filter. It does appear to be a smarter design.
I'm struggling with the 8 holes is better than 6 theory as the holes in the Toyota filter are clearly smaller than the Mobil and K&N filters.
Taking a presumptive stab the K&N and Mobil holes "appear" to be 1/4" diameter while the Toyota holes appear 3/16".
.25" x 6 = 1.5"
.1875" x 8 = 1.5"
Exactly the same 👍

Regarding the video, seems that some people are gravitating back to those plastic center cage, e-core design filters. I still avoid them like the plague. Here's a SuperTech ST3614 from 2010 that was in service for 5k miles.

Damn, what pushed through that? Hope it wasn't bouncing through the engine. I gotta show that to my kid so he will listen to me when I tell him "get your damn oil changed".

Don't buy a filter cutter. You start to shorten your OCI's just to cut filters open. Then you start cutting open new ones just to see what's inside. It's futile because filter designs are in constant flux.

If anyone needs Toyota oil filters at a reasonable price…$5ea.
this is my third set of 10…they last me about four years, but now that we are retired, might be five years.
