1992 SC400 with 69,000 miles.

So far just preventive maintainance, new plugs, wires, timing belt...

Only thing that actually needs to be done: Brake pads within a few months, 4 new struts (only one is leaking.) Thats all for now.

I really don't know what problems I had with it, I had only owned the car for about a week when I noticed the A/C compresser was out, took it to a mechanic, who told me the R&P was shot, so I took his word for it, (he owns same make &model)

Cost for the R&P was $300-$400 somewhere (dont remember exactly, with A/C comp it was about $750)

Default ruff numbers

here are some ruff numbers to the repairs done:

their were 11 post with info, one was an SC400 but I think the info is relevant

9\11 power steering pumps 7\11 timing belt
6\11 alternators 6\11 suspension
5\11 A/C compressor/components 4\11 brakes
4\11 LCD 4\11 O2 sensor
4\11 ball joint 4\11 egr pipe
4\11 rack & pinion 3\11 water pump
3\11 bushings 3\11 hood shocks
2\11- drive belt, antenna, starter, heater control, throttle sensor
ideller, springs

these were the main ones reported, there were about ten
other things reported but they all only recieved one report
so they were not documented. Surprisingly the LCD
recieved a low occurence (4\11) as did instrument cluster
reports, recieving only 1!

these numbers are pretty ruff, mostly due to the low number of reports, if more people respond I'll cotinue to updatethese stats. youre welcome, and thanks.

I just turned 200,000 on my 1990 LS 400. It runs really strong and looks great with no rust that I can see (I hope I didn't just jynx myself) which is remarkable for a New England car of this age. I am starting to have a few quirky problems with warning lights, gauges malfunctioning, etc.but I guess that goes with the territory on this baby. I do all my own work on all my autos and I think this is one of the best built machines I have ever had. I bought it from a friend's wife with 120,000 miles on it when it was 10 years old and have never looked back since. I'm a Lexus fan from this point on. GeorgeP.

I now have about 227,720 on my 1990 LS400. I have only had the rear struts replaced with original OEM struts. Not sure what all the previous (also the original) owner done to the car before I bought it. I do know that my LCD in the climate control, as well as my instrument cluster lighting is still in perfect working order, so I guess it is possible this was repaired at one point in time, because it seems like a very common problem. Aside from the vibration at 35-60 mph speeds, my car is still in perfect working order- (knock on wood).

1990 Pearl White with 186,000 (bought it with 71,000 miles):

Unscheduled Maintenance:
Power Steering Pump and hose - 178,000 miles
AC Evap and Compressor 110,000
Water Pump (replaced timing belt as part of repair) - 87,000
Seat recline shaft/spline - 112,000
Alternator (from leaking PS Pump) - 174,000 miles
Upper Ball Joints - 143,000
Keyless Entry - 137,000 (hadn't worked since I bought it)

Needed things:
Steering Rack has small leak but it is not really worth getting to now
LCD Display on the Climate Control - big suprise
Cam seal/Main seal leak - I also noticed this after I tried to switch to synthetics. I switched over to 10W-40 Valvoline Maxlife and the leak has all but disappeared.

Scheduled maintenance all performed as usual including transmissions flushes every 35,000 miles and brakes as needed. Which reminds me....if you do your own brakes, NAPA had "Made in the USA" front rotors for the LS400 for $23.00 when I bought them a few weeks ago!! I bought 4 just because I couldn't believe the price.

I would plan on keeping this car for another 100k if it wasn't for all the new safety innovations. I know someone who was recently killed in a side impact while driving a Dodge Neon - head impacted the glass. The LS400 is a BIG jump from a Neon but it makes you wonder if side impact curtains might have made a difference.

96 LS @ 183,000 + Orig. Owner, mostly DIY

Under warranty:
Power Antenna
Front ashtray

Out of pocket:
Timing Belt 99k
Power Steering Pump same time 99k
tires -of course
brake pads- front three times, rear once
front rotors 183k

That's about it. Lot's of oil changes. Now using Amsoil, but started out with dino, then Mobile One.

Just put in some "cleaner" into gas tank and wife comments, "it's really peppy."
It definitely drives much nicer than the 91, but I'm working on it.

Soooo... Recently bought a 91 LS with 72,000

watch the transmission, dude. My friend's '95 LS had the tranny die at 113k. spent $2600.00 on a rebuilt. Now he's having weird noises all over the cabin. He's fixing it up and selling it before something else breaks. I can't say i blame him.
