Default Navigation and Tints

I just noticed in my 05 LS430 owner's manual that Lexus DOES NOT recommend installing tints in cars with navigation because the metallic elements in some tints can interfere with the nav reception.

Two questions:

Does this make any sense? I thought the GPS antenna was on the roof?

Also, any 2004/5 owners out there with dark tints experienceing any problems or has it been just fine?

Thanks!!!

Since it's installed on the roof it might not interfere with the reception but I wouldn't take the chance of having a metallic tint installed. There are quite a few company's manufacturing metallic free tint that is perfectly safe for automobiles equipped with GPS Navigation systems.

Actually the gps antenna is not on the roof it is in the rear deck next to the subwoofer. I have tints on my car and it doesnt effect it.

I tinted the LS today WITH metallic tints -- the darkest possible. NO GPS problems! The cost for 5 windows with a 10 year warranty: $99.

Cool

Phone a few professional tint places & ask them what they say.......I think you should be fine however. Get a high quality tint as well such as LLumar.

www.llumar.com

Good Luck!

Did you use the HP or NR solargard film? I'm going to tint my LS next Monday and also have concern about the interferences with navi. Thanks.

I have noticed that my Nav is a little off some times, but nothing to the point where it throughs me off....

not like my other car, where I would be home and the nav would show that I was on the 710 freeway...which is about 11 miles west of my house.

Michifan12,

Thanks! Then I'm gonna put HP charcoal. Woohoo.

OGS,

I'm curious what is your other car. That's pretty amazing.

Actually, I had a similar tint topic few days ago but am not clear yet on which tint brand I should use.

I was quoted $240 for my LS for carbon-based Solargard. Anyone knows which one is better Llumar or Solargard?

What is HP vs NR Solargard?

thanks.

HP is high performance that contains metal.
NR is non-reflective that does not contain metal which is better for GPS.

Both Llumar and Solargard are reputable brands. Can't go wrong with any of them.

I was quoted $195 for 4 doors + rear windows for any solargard tint I like, including quantum which is the most expansive line (not like I like reflective finish). And since I have the hook up, the owner knocks off another 20%. Hopefully he will not knock off the quality of the work too. lol.

Ha.. I know exactly what you mean, my friend. My uncle has the 04 SL600 with navi. The car just stalled in the middle of freeway several times and none of the dealers could find any problem. Already file lawsuit to the benz headquarter. That car is problematic.
