All,
I just upgraded the NAV DVD on my 2002 Lexus LS430 UL last weekend.
Here are my impressions.
The NAV systems in the 2002 and the 2004 model years are completely different units. So the graphics on the new system and colors are much better. The older units have more plain looking graphics. The NAV upgrade will only upgrade the database or roads and POI's. It will look the same overall.
After the upgrade, you will not see any major changes in pictures or graphics. Basically it looks the same. However, many new POI's (Points of Interest) have been added. From 2 million to over 5 million. More ATM, gas station, bank, and other POI locations have been added.
Many new roads and streets are missing from the old NAV. The new NAV has many smaller strees and roads.
I think it's really worth it. Cost was $301 from Dealer with a $25 charge for installation.
I paid $295 (for the DVD and installation).
Please feel free to e-mail with any questions.
Do I think its worth it?
Yes, the newly added ATM, Banks, Parking Garages, Gas Stations, and Restraunts are a great help.
The biggest improvement is in the added Streets and small roads. The old map database was missing many streets and many gated communities. The new map is absolutely wonderful.
So if you hhave not upgraded from the origirnal 1.0 (which is what I had), you really need to upgrade to 4.1.
Thanks,
Uzy Malik

I ordered from Sewell website a few weeks ago. $267.95 including shipping, self installation was less than 5 minutes. Their link is on this site.

My understanding was that the 4.X versions of the DVD/CD will not work in the 2002 Navigation player in my LS430. Your post has me confused. Did you change over the entire system (player, CD, etc) or did they just use the new disk version?
Can I do the upgrade myself if I only have the CD? Where is the player in the car?
IOW, which version of the disk will work in my Nav player?

The version 4.1 is the latest version of the Nav for the 2002 LS430.
I believe the 2003 has the same.
But the 2004 and newer Lexus LS430 has a new version of the NAV system. I believe they was a differernt DVD version. But I can't be sure.

I just bought a 2004 with Nav. Does anyone know what version it supposed to have? The serial number falls within the recall and I don't know if it has been upgraded or not.
