Default Pitted glass from highway driving

Hello all,

I have just purchased a 2003 LS430 that was driven on the highway, to say the least.

The front end is chipped from said highway driving which I will be getting fixed (or trying myself - tips?).

My bigger concern is the windshield. It is quite pitted from all the highway driving. It doesn't present a huge issue except when the sun is shining directly on the windshield. There is also additional scratching from the wipers.

Does anyone have any advice on what I can do without removing the windshield? I had the windshield replaced on my 97 LS400 and was not pleased with the shop's work. Also, I am concerned about the replacement windshield being of lower quality.

I appreciate any help you can offer.

Kind regards,

T.J.

i doubt if there is anything you can do. you can probably try some glass polish and see if that helps, but the way i see it, replacement is the only best way. my gs400 is just like how you describe, i am just waiting to get new glass later.

Polarized sunglasses do wonders for scratched windshields. Considering this may be a visability safety issue, a replacement windshield would be my chocie. I had PPG glass installed in mine and having compared the clarity of other glass I've had, the PPG is excellent. IMO.

I have installed PPG Glass and it is excellent and no issues what so ever. The only issue the installation has caused is loose trim along the roof on the driver side. Cost is around $150.

Anyone with recent experience in windshield glass replacement? Had stone chip in 2004 on my three-month old LS430 that was "repaired" versus replacement. The repair is now deteriorating, coming out, and am told only option is now to replace the windshield. Got a quote of about $2k for OEM glass versus $500 for PPG. Recall hearing stories about don't use non-OEM glass due to the rain sensor and other properties built into the OEM glass that after-market won't have.

Any truth or is this just rumor to get more OEM installed and higher margins?

The person I bought my 430 from had the windshield replaced for whatever reason. He did get the OEM Lexus windshield but said there was a slight whistling noise when at high speeds. I'm sure it had something to do with sealing it. Anyways, he took it to the Lexus dealer and they put a strip of the clear laminate that people put on the front bumper and hood and it fixed the problem.

Mine replaced by the PPG type, rain sensor works perfectly and the glass is as good as the original. Total cost less than $200 2 years ago. The job was done in front of my garage on a weekend and it took 30 minutes to complete.

PPG glass looks great but does anyone know if it's legal in California?

MTA: I don't really care about PPG glass or if it's legal in CA - I just wanted to see if I could get a rise out of the Aggie or the Sooner with my first-class avatar.
