Default Best tire for our cars

have a 2005 that has about 40% tread life left on the OEM tires,, have the ULTRA package so it is loaded and has the 18" chromes,,

not a large selection of rubber out there in that size but wanted to post the question to see what others have found to be one of the better tires to run,,

appreciate,,

I've got Michelin Pilot Sport A/S that i recently installed on my 18's and I LOVE them. They are quiet, smooth, and handle very well in both dry and wet conditions. Thing is, they are only $20+ per tire from the regular joe schmo brand tires. So it made perfect sense.

Never knew about this place till after i bought tires... wish i knew... free shipping too:

Another vote here for the Pilot A/S tires. I have 18's as well. Vast improvement in grip as measured by my seat of the pants exit ramp testing. Wet cornering traction vastly improved over the Dunlop SP5000's. At 25,000 miles there was decent tread but they were just getting greasy feeling in wet conditions. The Pilots have a nice aggressive pattern that looks pretty cool too. Good luck!

We've got the same car, in the same color, with the same option, in the same year, now with the same tires

Pilot looks good but side by side ratings show the Bridgestone Protenza 960AS to be better in I think every category and cheaper. Comments?

I'm normally a hardcore Michelin man, but in a moment of weakness and trying to minimize the spending, I bought the same size Dunlops in Sport 01A. Now I'm not happy with the road noise (not TOO bad, but just more that a car like the LS really should have -- certainly not as quiet as stockers) and I wish I'd gotten Michelins. I'd have had to change the size a little though because the Pilot Sport A/S doesn't come in the sizes above. I MIGHT be interested in the Primacy, which comes in the sizes, but I'd need to do some more research.

Carlcline - I was all set to get the Bridgestones you mention. However, in November they were at 2 month availability with no improvement in sight. I needed to move before the snow hit so I went with the Michelins. Maybe availability is better now. Good luck!

Bruce,

Thanks for info on Bridgestones. My 05 LS 430 still has plenty of tread.

At first I had Dunlop SP Sport 4000, extremely quiet tires. (16 inch)

Then I switch to 17-inch AVON M550 A/S Performance All Season Tires.. the ride is a bit harsher.. the noise is up a bit, but the handling is much better, but of course not as great as summer tires. But for a 17 inch.. it was set at a decent price, $120 per tire. Oh, no problem on snow (VSC ON)..

If anyone wants dry traction, try Yokohama Advan Neova AD07.. unbelievably sticky, but the ride is still OK.

If you want superior dry traction, try NITTO NT555R.. probably one of stickiest street tires you can buy. Very right for drag racing too.
