Default Ca registration of private party purchase, how much? sales tax?

I am negotiating a purchase of ls430, california registered, from a private party. Just curious, is sales tax collected by CA DMV when a private party purchased vehicle is transferred/registerred? How much will it cost to register/transfer a $45,000 car purchased from private party? Thanks.

yes, you have to pay sales tax to dmv, and i think it depends on where you live. ca, probably around 8%, you can do the math, comes out to about 3600

can't remember the fee to transfer title and registration, but won't be that significant

Unless you can get the seller to say they sold it to you for less than actual price. Then you'd pay less tax. Basically, as far as they are concerned, the purchase price is between buyer and seller.

That is $3600 I didn't account for it in my loan app. I better revise the amount of my loan. Romini, Supraristo thanks.

ah gotcha, yup definitely keep that in mind. like suprarito said, if the seller is willing to write down lower number on the pink slip, that's all up to the seller. i won't say more coz' technically this is illegal

and keep in mind if dmv is suspicious about the selling price, i heard they can force a blue book selling price and tax from there

We were treated badly by my credit union. So, I used the deposit i had with them and paid cash instead of borrowing. Paid for yesteday and registered with CADMV today. The total tax/registration:$3532. Here is a pic. 2005 LS430.
