I own a '01 430 ultra and am looking to upgrade to a '04 or '05. I know there is very little difference between the two. However, a difference is that Lexus discontinued the Lexus Link in '05. Does anyone know why?

I do not know why it would be discontinued back in 2005, but in 2008 or sooner, the older analog systems are no longer required to be supported, only digital. This is the system, not something any user, including Lexus, has any control over so the older cars' Lexus Link will not work fairly soon.

Just bought a 2005 from the dealer and he removed the link device. They will do this for free through the end of 2007, and thereafter they will charge for it to be removed.

Where and what is the "Device" that gets removed ?

The Lexus link hardware, namely activation buttons, are removed. Other than that, I can't answer, since I never saw it to begin with.
