Default Smart Key

I tested drive several 04 LS430 last weekend and the smart key needed to be push on the unlock of the remote before the ignition can turn to start the car. On several occasion the ignition won't turn even after the unlock was push on the remote.
What so smart about the smart key?
Do you need to program the remote so it can be in your pocket all the time?
How does it work when the remote in your pocket and you approach the car, the doors automatically unlock?

Thanks,

Smart Key System allows the user to keep the key on your person and approach the car, the puddle lamps light up sensing the key and the doors will unlock when the handle is grabbed and the sensor on the inside is touched. When inside the car the ignition switch may be turned and the car will start. However, stopping the car, shifting to Park and exiting the vehicle with a smart key will NOT lock the car when you are out of range. A feature most desired by smart key users.

VQT, sound like your SmartKey has been disabled. There is a hidden switch located under the dash (above the gas pedal) where you can turn on or off the SmartKey system. Also located there is the reset for tire monitor sensor. I know alot of dealers turn the system off when they receive the car back from trade in .
