Default 2004 LS430: Should I Let it Go?

I am thinking about getting a 2008 LS460. Should I do it...and let my 2004 LS430 with ML go? I've got about 45K on it and it's in perfect condition. Dealer is talking about $31,000 trade...if I try to sell it on my own how do I do it? Newspaper? Autotrader? Ebay? Or do you think I outta just take the $31K?

I think it's a very fair trade-in:

KBB.com
Excellent
$33,550
Good
$31,805
Fair
$28,620

It also depends what kind of discount you are getting for your NEW LS460

Also, depending upon the tax situation in your state, you may avoid sales tax on the trade-in amount. In Florida, you'd in effect be getting $31K x 1.07 for your car. In other words, you wouldn't have to pay sales tax on that 31K when you bought the 460.

I've never had luck selling in a Newspaper. Autotrader (print and lately on-line) has done better for me. I've never sold one via e-bay, but have sold about 30 vehicles otherwise.

The real question is do you want to let it go or not?

When I bought my LS430, I sold my Toyota Avalon on Craigslist.com. It took about a week. I got the "KBB Excellent" price for it. It was in excellent condition & low miles. It looks like you still have some factory warranty left which is a big plus. It does look like your dealer is offering you a pretty fair offer. let us know what you do.

You will always lose when you trade in a car or try to cash out through a dealer. You also always lose when you buy a new car.

From what I've heard, the LS460 isn't any "better" than the LS430 other than it's faster. The interior isn't any quieter, and the ride isn't any smoother.

I plan on getting a LS460 in ~2 years when their prices are reasonable, but right now, a new UL costs, what, around $100K? Why spend that when my LS430UL (which I got for an amazing price of $35K) is just as nice and smooth?

Exactly, the LS460 is no doubt an extremely beautiful car to own, however, rightnow, the my '04 UL is still the best choice in my book value wise, and I still get amazed everytime i drive it after driving the GS.

You guys are missing the WOW factor. The new LS looks amazing, were else the LS430 is dated. I think the front of LS430 still looks very good, back still looks alright, but side profile looks pretty lame. The new LS460 looks great all the way around... it depends on what your budget is...

I'm not that excited by the new LS. I still would be interested in getting one someday when the prices for excellent condition used ones drop about $15-20K, but I like the ride, drive, quiet, acceleration, and overall feel of my (mildly modified) 430 just as well, and in some ways, better (due to the effect of the mods). I do NOT like the way the 460 looks like an ES, Avalon, and GS (Of course Toyota is only one of many makers doing this look-alike styling across their product line.) The flagship should be more distinguished from the rest of the line, like it was with the 430. And Lexus, please lose the gay fake exhaust 'tips' from the 460.

Unfortunately everyone wants the NEW thing. The LS430 was and still is my dream car. I wouldn't trade it for a 460 because I know if Lexus redesigns it tomorrow and makes an LS570 then everyone will want that one and the 460 will not be so hot anymore. I say this because I feel some people are victims of marketing(not all some just really prefer the new design) and if you really analyze the interior features of the new LS, my 02' UL has nothing to envy from that new car except maybe shiatsu massage and a tray. I can install both those features for far less that the 55k extra I would have to spend to get a new 460l EXECUTIVE. Dont get me wrong, I love the 460 and when my cars service life is up I will buy a used 460 and drive it as long as I plan to drive this 430.

MY .02

have not seen what all the new 2008 will be above the 2007,, when we took the 2007 460 for a test ride I have to say I was not that impressed with the new car,, guess I was expecting considerably more,, my 05 UL is cherry with 25K miles and we did not even get into discussing a possible trade,,

writing the check is not a problem, just thought there was not any considerable improvement in the 460 above my 430,, wife also was a tad down on the new design,,

at this rate it may take the 2011 model change year to get the blood flowing for a new model,, just like this one so much and a joy to drive everytime I'm behind the glass,,

No one is denying the wow factor. Would I love to own an LS460/LS600H Tomorrow? sure. However, I dont consider it worth it at the moment compared to my currently LS, keeping in mind the monetary exchange vs. what i conceive to be the product value.

The top of the line LS460 is over twice the value on my UL, now is it really more then twice the "car"? everyone will give you a different answer.

I don't think so. I think most answers will be the same. HELL NO!

IMO the only people who should consider a LS460 are:
1) Don't own a LS430 already
2) Money isn't an issue

I disagree, they probably do own a LS430 w/ close to 100k miles or coming off lease w/35k miles. One or the other.
Money is a factor (for LS owners, that's why they care so much about reliability IHMO), otherwise they will buy S65 "BEAST".
Love the LS460, but if I made over 1/4 million a year, I'm getting S63/65, not a lexus.
