Default Broken Key LS 430

The plastic from my Key broke. The key consists of the key itself, the remote guts, and a transponder. The dealers wanted anywhere from $80 to $90 to replace the key since I had the guts intact. You had to pick it up in person. On this key the transponder is incorporated into the guts. Since I live 200 miles from the nearest lexus dealer I thought I would try my local toyota dealer. Lithia/Redding, CA. They would order the key from Sacramento Lexus ($90 retail) and then sell it to me for $116. Hardly a bargain I thought. They claim to support Lexus owners.

I went online and found:

http://www.toy-lex.com

I had a new key in 3 days for $40.

Dumb question. Did you have to send them (toy-lex) your broken key or did they cut you a new one by just having your vehicle's VIN?

Sewell Lexus is cheaper, and they give you OEM stuff.

Check ebay, I see the plastic cases going for $20-40....unless you need a whole key cut and a new transponder

I've never had a Lexus key not break. Built like crap. I've gotten very good with epoxy, fiberglass, and carbon fiber.

Never thought of the eBay approach. Interesting. I've got two broken keys now, one for each car.

Are there any warranty issues that can be approached with these?

I purchased a brand new OEM key (w/o transponder - I used the one from my old key) on ebay from the seller aristo25 for $69, free shipping within the US. He will also cut the key at no charge using your VIN #. I received my cut key within a few days after paying. He also sells just the cover with a chrome or gold "L" for $17. He may also have the key with transponder if you ask. Here is a recent auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LEXUS...QQcmdZViewItem

Warranty? I got a free new case under warranty (2002 CPO), otherwise I would have had to pay 85 dollars at a Lexus dealer.

It would be cheaper to get a replacement key case from anywhere other than the dealers.

I hope Lexus found new materials for newer models. They gold-plated the airbag connections and did very well on the whole car, but they chose cheap material for the key case...
