what to inspect & look for when buying a used LS430 Ultra?
Hi All,
As you may have read in another thread, I am buying a 2001 LS430 Ultra with 109000 miles. I am flying out tomorrow to get it and drive it 800 miles home. I was hoping you might be able to give me some tips on what exactly to look for to make sure I am buying right.
I know I need to look for leaks in the suspension components, but more specifically, where to look and what exactly to look for. I know about checking fluids, tire wear and basics of used car buying but I am new to the LS430 (yay!).
Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure I *am* getting a good deal, at least I certainly hope so, I just needed some advice on inspection. However, since you asked, and I would like you opinion on that as well: I am paying $15,700 plus $269 for my flight and an estimate $150 for expenses fo rthe drive home.

I would check the steering for pulling to either side. Brake firmly with your hands loosley off the wheel to see if the vehicle pulls to either side strongly. Open the trunk, hood and all doors including the fuel door to check for paint overspray, this will indicate if the car has had any body work. Check all the electrical components including the hazards, breaklights, directionals, radio, ac, heat, power mirrors, navigation, rear massage seats and heated seats, headlights, foglamps, highbeams etc. Electrical problems can be very expensive. If you see a lamp out I would recommend switching the light out with a working one on the other side to determine if it is a bulb issue or a more serious issue. Bring a CD with you to check the CD player. Checking all these things will take some time but it will be well worth it. If you have the vin # you can also call the local Lexus dealer and get an idea of if the vehicle was dealer serviced and how often. Best of luck with everything

Saw this thread --- if air shocks are worn out --- do this ...
http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums...37119&hl=ultra
Quote from thread ....
The Height button should control height of the Air Suspension. On my Lex, the Height Indicator light located in the lower left-hand corner of the dash should indicate "NORMAL" (or "HI" when the button is activated). I believe when in "NORMAL" mode with speed at or beyond 83 MPH (at least on my model/year), will indicate "LO" for performance-related driving. If you see no difference in height when the Height button is activated, there is probably something worng with your Air Suspension air bags (or it is shot), or your Air Suspension has been replaced with conventional coil-over struts. I had mine replaced because they all went bad. $1000 per each air bag (at the stealer....I mean dealer) not including labor. I ordered coil-overs from Arnott Industries (http://www.arnottindustries.com/part...arts_yid7.html) at $649 for all 4 and did it myself. Fairly easy if you're a DIYer. If you want to replace the air bags, they have them for $399 each.

Not for nothing...but why not take it to the Lexus dealer, pay them a hundred bucks, and have it professionally evaluated. They may also have some history on the car. Did this with a Mercedes a while back and saved myself a ton of money. If the seller has any hesitation or excuse; run as fast as you can away from the "deal."
