Default Tilt and Telescopic steering repair

Help ls430 01 my telescopic steering works fine, but the tilt wont work at all. Also, when i take the key out of the ignition, the telescopic part retracts, but when i put the key back in, it doesnt come back out. I hear the gears in the motor click and then nothing. I have to push the button and bring it out myself. my biggest concern is the tilt part. i took the clam shell housing off and didnt see anything obvious like disconnected wires. is there any way to at least manual adjust it and set it? its stuck in the down position. In my user manual there is an astrik next to the tilt info that says "this is a feature and that can be turned off ask dealer for info" maybe previous owner had it turned off ( bought the car at auction so i dont have any more detail ). any suggestions would be helpful. Default Tilt Steering Wheel

I am having the same problem. A lexus service specialist I spoke with over the phone said it might be a bad motor or a bad switch. Please let me know if you guys hear anything else.

I can only say that when I had the problem, it was fixed just by putting in a new battery (old one tested showing a bad cell). Now, that may be a one-in-a-million, but that was my experience.

I had Lexus disable the steering tilt away feature for the very reason of high repairs when it starts failing. I don't miss it either.

My dealer disabled the feature for free while I had the car in for other service.

I just had my entire steering column replaced under the CPO warranty for this. It's actually not covered (only the motor). What happened was the column had seized, and it was tilting, but not telescoping. I guess since I just bought the car they decided to give it to me. $1600 charged to the warranty

i cannot believe Lexus has problems with this... they've been doing the motorized tilt/tele steering wheel for decades. Guess we can blame Lexus and their suppliers for poor quality parts on our LS430s.

As you can tell, Lexus quality is starting to really irritate me!

Thanks Ayonnebay but my my battery is less than two months old. When that went bad i had a whole host of other problems too..

Interesting video! But upon disassembling the column shroud, i noticed the mechanism is slightly different on the 430s. The tilt motor thingy faces towards the front so you'll have to contort your body at an odd angle. Anyway i applied some grease and oil to all the gears that move in the area but to no avail. My problem is that the wheel dont tilt up without me having to push upward on it. Downwards works but i can tell it will be next. Telescoping works fine. Looks like a new motor will be in play next. Anyone with any ideas on the price and easy of installation?

No charge. I was able to talk to the tech working on my car and he just did it for me. I took care of him when I got my car back.
