Oil change...how to
#16
Facts not fiction
If you have the LS430, it takes 5.5qts of oil. You will need ramps to raise the front up enough to allow the flap that covers the filter to swing at least 90 degrees so the oil doesn't make a mess. Undo the filter and put a new one on. The oil drain plug is aft of the plastic engine cover so look for it and then drain it. Go topside and add your oil, start it up, check for leaks, and if none, button up the flap. Reset your oil system maintenance and your'e good to go.
Interval is up to you depending on the oil used and your tolerance level for such things.

I dunno dog, this was the first time I didn't remove the entire tray. The filter is sitting horizontally so when you remove the filter oil just doesn't run straight out - it starts to go towards the rear of the car (I'm doing this at home so the front end of the car is jacked up) then just starts to drip other places. I'll see if I can be more careful next time but it was a giant mess this last time.

My 2001 LS430 uses the same filter as my 2005 Tundra truck. I buy a bunch at a time from a Toyota mail order place.
One trick that helps is to use a short bungie cord to hold the little trap door wide open while you are messing with the filter, other wise it's memory makes it keep migrating into your way!
I find the oil change easier on the car vs the truck as I don't have to remove the skid plate, just open the trap door.

turns out the owner's manual is wrong, it said 4.8
I looked into the service manual, it say 5.4......
Then I check my dip stick, sure enough, it was about 0.3 too low
I knew I shouldn't have doubt a guy who owned 19 Lexuses

oil filter
I use the top of the line Amsoil filter and synthetic oil in my 02 LS430. I did significant research on this line of products and have been extremely pleased. One oil and filter change per 1 year or 25,000 mi. You might check out the site. www.amsoil.com

What is cracked so bad? The filter or the filter bracket/housing? Or is the filter all mangled from the pliers and still won't turn? ... is it really that stuck?
try a pipe wrench or a chain wrench. be careful not to break the filter bracket..good luck!
