Default Rear bumper damage

I have my rear bumper damaged by inadvertantly backing into parked utility truck. Dealer says the entire bumper needs to be replaced - approx $1150. Any ideas if there are better alternatives?

My car is a gold 04LS Sport with parking sensors.

Thanks and Best regards

Here's a breakdown of it:
bumper - $360 (I think)
chrome strip - $80
the rest is cost of paint and labor

I got a quote from 2 bodyshops to repaint my rear bumper too and that's what they gave me (around 1200-1350).

I had the rear bumper replaced on my 03. Cost $1322 but one of the parking sensors was smashed and had to be replaced as well - cost $252. So that seems to be in the ballpark.

See if they may cut some of the labor cost. I found that dealerships can sometimes if you ask give you a break on the labor. That's were most of the cost is coming from. The price you were quoted isnt horrible though for bumper(with sensors) replacement.

wow 1000 + dollars, they are making an insane amount of profit.

it's hard to say if it can be repaired without seeing it.

Maybe his sensors were turn off at the point, or not working properly, i just doubt he did it on purpose.

There is a button to the left of the steering wheel "if I'm not mistaken" that will disable the sensor. I've needed to do it several times, when a layer of ice covers one, it will continuously beep. I could be wrong, it's been two years since I had my last LS and my new one "another 05" isn't here yet, but i' pretty sure you are able to disable it.

The sensors are really only good for parallel parking, or in situations where you inch the car ever so lightly.

If you back up normally, I doubt the sensors have enough time to notify you there's an object in the way.

Thanks guys for all the info. As a matter of fact the parking sensor did not go off - not sure why - possibly due to a blind spot or not enough time to respond - I tend to think it's due to a blind spot as the bumper on the utility truck sticks out in a narrow horizontal plane. On the issue of disabling the sensor alarm, there is a switch to the left of the steering column.

Best regards

With all said as to your issue,I forgot to say sorry about your bumper. I hate when things like that happen to me but, just thought right now how you may be feeling with the issue your facing. I always wish i could go back in time an reverse what happened when things like that happen.

Had my bumper(no sensors) damaged and was only surface damage but, backed up into my girlfriends car so it was stressful. She owns a 2004 Acura TSX. Fortunate for me she declined to have her damage fixed. Girls can be so cool when it comes to things at times. I just have to clean hers and repair my car. She totally refused to have it fixed. Sorry that it happened to you bro!

Mel - thanks for the kind thoughts! I too will probably wait until the edge is taken of the useless expense before getting the bumper fixed.

Best regards
