Has anyone actually installed some real power mods?
I've been in talks with a Toyota/Lex performance shop guy and I think I'm going to try out a modestly aggressive set of cams with valve springs and possible a set of headers + mellow exhaust.
I think this should give me, at a conservative estimate, maybe 60 whp. From what I understand, the stock cams are pretty mild. If I don't go too crazy with the grind, I should be able to maintain the legendary LS silkiness with a nice top-end rip and a proper 32v V-8 wail at WOT.
This is just the beginning/planning phase, but the hardest part, getting approval from the household CFO (aka: Wife) is already complete. If our house sale goes good this year, I'm good to go sometime next year.
Just wondering if anyone (outside of Japan) has touched their engines? Internals and tranny are reportedly good for 400-440whp, so I'll be well within those limits.
Seeking advice and opinions on an exhaust setup, as well.

Performance Parts
You may already be familiar with Carson... http://www.l-tunedparts.com/model/st...id=94&cat_id=1 but if not, this link will take you to their "L-Tuned" website where they list several engine performance parts for the LS430 including the SuperCharger Kit. I believe it's manufactured by Tom's Racing in Japan and they are just an authorized dealer. I haven't done any of this myself, but it is on my list of things to do. I'd be interested in knowing how it turns out after you have done the mods.

That supercharger kit is also more than TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLARS(!) for about a 100whp gain.
The 4 cams and associated hardware will cost me $2300. Headers/exhaust can be added later at my leisure. It looks like a custom exhaust will be the way to go, judging by the prices for aftermarket exhausts for these cars.

I'll try to get a good baseline dyno run before I do the cams. If I do everything in stages, I'll try to get a few runs for each mod to see what difference they make.

Climb under there and look at that exhaust system from the heads back. One of most restrictive looking I've ever seen, and makes me think that airflow through the engine could be improved a decent bit with headers and exhaust.
Also, before making any mods I would put a wideband on it and see what it's doing, Air/Fuel Ratio wise. And check to see what AFR tuning options there are. If you can't tune it afterwards, the mods are a crapshoot.
That said, the modest power gains that can be had without forced induction aren't worth the cost, IMO. Turbo that thang!
