LOL Me too -- I guess I'm too old skool or too performance minded, but when I see a "rubber band" sidewall the following immediately come to mind:
- car rides much worse than it would with a little more sidewall
- car is noiser inside than it would be with a little more sidewall
- car doesn't have as much lateral grip as it would with more sidewall
- car doesn't hook in straight line traction as well as it would with more sidewall (not an issue with an LS430, but it is with some cars)
- car probably looks more impressive to people who don't know or don't care about these items

Of course when you point out the above there's always someone who says "My car didn't suffer any of those downsides when I switched to 225/25/20's." LOL And I say: "Once again, through the magical power of the internet, someone manages to achive the impossible."

Let me respond to these facts being rubber banded and all:

true, but air suspension helps a little w/ comfort
- car is noiser inside than it would be with a little more sidewall
i think this is more of a brand tire issue, but in all, yeah, it gets noisier on the inside vs stock (stock 16" wheels).
- car doesn't have as much lateral grip as it would with more sidewall
not too sure about that, cuz some rubber bands do get wider...it all depends on the width setup i guess
- car doesn't hook in straight line traction as well as it would with more sidewall (not an issue with an LS430, but it is with some cars)
to me, this would be an issue w/ suspension and what kind of alignment or alignment issues you have. but yeah, judging from my specs, i don't have as much straightline traction as the next OEM joe.
- car probably looks more impressive to people who don't know or don't care about these items

I agree 100%

I think 19" are too small for the LS unless you are planning to bag it to the ground. Love the shoes and the stepped lip though. 20" tires rubberbands??? haha!! I'm rolling on 20" and Tien CS Coilovers and it feels stock to me and it looks good.

I like it both thats why i cant decide which size to go with 19" or 20"? I was gonna go with 19's because of the smoother ride but still not sure. Has anybody went with 20's but with 255/40/20 set up?

I'm having the same trouble. Being in downtown Chicago, where the potholes are RIDICULOUS, it's hard to imagine going with 20's, even though they look hella better. I'm leaning towards 19's myself but just can't decide. I need to soon so I can get my winters off!

I was just back from Chicago and I believe you how bad the roads are. My god, huge cracks in the road, pot holes, I wouldn't want to ride a motorcycle on those streets. Sitting in a cab with bad suspension, we were bouncing up and down like a bad rollercoaster. Get the 18" with the even higher sidewall

F it and 20 up. 19s are tight only when they are like 11 and 13 inches wide. 255/40/20 is retarded. i have 255/35/20 fk452s on my rears and they are tall as hell. but after having rubberband 25s for a while, 35s on a 20 feel like stock tires. i drive everywhere with them w/ no worries. however, i should also mention that i have replaced so many bent and cracked 20s that i am immune to disappointment as biting the bullet has become an everyday thing

wow guys, I just tried on some 20" with 245 35 20 tires and the ride comfort has dramatically decreased compared to 19" with 40 series.

Looks better but rides worse. I guess it's just the pay to play mentality. I think I will go back to 19".

Don't get me wrong i would rather go 255/35/20 route but the only reason i want to go 255/40/20 is because of the ride quality. If i do go 255/40/20 will i still have the cracked and bent wheels to worry about

If you are close to stock, then stick to stock for the comfort. Being on 20's and adjusting my coilovers for comfort does a lot. Keep at your status but your view on 20" rims I don't agree.

You'll still have to worry just like u would any aftermarket wheels, but not as much as u would with 35 series.

40 series on 20" will raise the car because it will go beyond the stock wheel-tire diameter, so you'll definitely need to lower it. I'm not sure how low you'll be able to lower it because the 40" series on 20" will be taking a lot of space.

LOL Some of you guys are acting like there are 6" difference between a 19" and a 20" wheel with all your comments about how monmumentally better a 20 looks. I think you're obsessing over it a bit and there isn't THAT much difference in 1".

For those who are considering the size/aspect ratio question and wondering if you'll destroy the LS amazing ride, I suggest you pay heed to what I and others have written about ride quality deterioriation. Despite the magical internet results that some report it generally is a very real issue. No free lunch, and all...

Now carry on, and believe what you like.
