Default tranny problems?

A guy I know said he used to sell Lexus cars. He mentioned that the LS had lots of tranny problems and even some recalls. Do you guys know which years he was talking about and if it's an 04 or newer, how can I tell if the recall was taken care of before I buy the car?

Thanks again.

There was a tranny recall. When the LS was parked on steep hills, a part could break off and cause the car to begin rolling. Other than this, I don't know of any major tranny problems. Mine still shifts like silk at 45k miles. These things are built like tanks and I think it will be a long time before we see serious issues creep up in these cars.

The tranny problems are on some 04 model and you can find out if your car was in the batch by running the VIN# at a lexus dealer, theycan tell you if it was and if the work was done.

some early 04 models. The problem was fixed later.
Geez, I have a 04, I should go to Lexus and check it out.

ya and it wasn't the tranny in particular, it was another that leaked in which it leaked and spilled on top of the tranny. something like that.

As I understand it, the real-world occurrence of the "problem" was very low. Unlike other manufacturers who often wait years before they finally fix a problem in production, Lexus jumped on it immediately with a "recall" and consequently it seemed like a bigger issue than it really was. That's my take on it...

Will a dealer do that if you didn't buy the car from them?

They usually do, at least in my area.
